Lord I' ills, is found shot to death. Mrs. Burnham takes Miss Vundas "under her wing" much to Lady Taifs annoyance. A luncheon given by Lady Tait in honor of Tait and his fiancee, and attended by John's cousins, Alysia, Etta and Claud Vaylor, is a poor success owing to Taifs apparent uneasiness. Tea is interrupted by the discovery of John Taifs body on the sidewalk in front of Lady.

Taifs home. Suspecting he has been poisoned, Chief Inspector Pointer of Scotland Yard investigates what appears to be murder and first questions the victim's cousin, Claud Vayior. Talking with Lucy Burnham, Pointer learns that Tait received a death threat by letter the same day Lord MUls had killed himself. Then the inspector interviews tiady Tait. Itext Pointer Questions Alysia and Etta Naylor, Taifs cousins.

When he reaches Gillian Duidas, he finds terror and dread written in her eyes. Pointer learns that two specks he had taken from the fingers of one of Taifs hands were spun glass from an object which probably contained the fatal poison. Then he searches Taifs rooms and finds certain deletions in an engagement book. (NOW GO ON WITB THE STORY) over a major part of the belt, al CORN No. 2.

There was a comfortable balance scribbled on the back of the last counterfoil.

Pointer looked at the pile of old counterfoils fastened together with a rubber band which he found in a locked drawer. Two things Interested him. Some five months ago was a check to Self for 500 followed the next week by one for 50. The same thing happened exactly six months before. Hero too a check for 500 to Self was followed by another to Self of 50.

There was nothing else of Interest. Nowhere did any name occur that might fit the erased blank in the engagement book. Pointer took the check book and the old block of counterfoils. Then he looked once more through the engagement book. There were no other erasures nor any other name that seemed to properly Bt the blank.

The valet professed an absolute ignorance concerning what was, or was not, in the book. An ignorance that, seeing the book lay out on the table, struck the chief Inspector as overdone. Did Mr. Tait keep his old engagement books? Pointer expected a negative, but to his joy the man pointed to a locked cupboard. "Full of stuff of that sort.

Brought over from a cupboard they're altering in his house." Pointer found inside it all he would have desired a pile of personal books of all kinds. But he had to go back nearly a year In an engagement book before he found an entry. "Letter from W. Wants me to go there. Made an appointment over the phone for tomorrow," and on the following day was an asterisk.

So the erased Initial was probably W. There was no other helpful entry in the book. After some fruitless, further searches, be came on an old game book nearly six years old. In it he found several entries that showed that Tait had often shot at a place called Pilgrim's Halt, and that on each of these occasions there was always one name among his fellow guns that did not vary, the name of Westmacott. Probably, therefore, the host.

Pointer saw that by trying the letters on tissue paper over the erasure, the name would exactly fit In. Westmacott of Pilgrim's Halt -sounded familiar. But why the erasure, and the guarded entry today at 11? He weat to the nearest telephone outside the house and rang 47 47 24 Cecil Wright, cashier of the Bank of Whiting, is charged with staying away from home four and five days at a time in a divorce action filed today in Hammond Superior court by his wife of less than two years, Mrs. Amelia Wright.
