It takes pins because for a perfect fit you should pin the material together at the seams so closely that one pin touches the other. If it is to be your first attempt at a slipcover, better make a muslin pattern first or if you have old slipcovers that fit well, rip them apart and use them as a pattern.

It is possible to cut the slipcover material to fit as you go along, generally following the seams in the upholstery. Pin it wrong side out until it fits smoothly and there is no pull on the material at any point. Basting may seem like an extra chore but it will make for a better fit. If you are going to add trim, rip the basting about six Inches at a time, insert the trim, and rebaste before the final stitchirtg. Cushionless couches and chairs offer special fitting problems.

Sew a piece of twill tape lengthwise across at the point where the back meets the seat, leaving long streamers to tie around behind and the cover will stay in place.
