NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) Ugandan troops for the first time stood and fought an invasion force of Tanza-nians and Ugandan exiles, resulting in hundreds of deaths in the heaviest fighting of the war, reports from East Africa capitals said Saturday. Tanzanian officials said Ugandan President Idi Amin took the war back into Tanzania Saturday as Ugandan warplanes struck the town of Kyaka, 20 miles inside Tanzania. The Tanza-nlans said only one Tanzanian was wounded and three Ugandan planes were shot down.

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -Hanoi proposed Saturday that Vietnamese and Chinese negotiators open peace talks in the war-ravaged Vietnamese border town of Lang Son next Friday, five weeks after Chinese forces struck across the frontier to "punish" Vietnam. Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping (Teng Hsiao-ping) said in Peking Saturday night that Chinese troops have "entirely" withdrawn from Vietnam.

He spoke with reporters during an intermission at a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert. But tens of thousands of Vietnamese were reported digging new defense lines Saturday on the border with China, and in the Laotian capital of Vientiane thousands of Laotians reportedly marched to protest what they said were Chinese plans to take over their country. For the first time in the 34-day-old Vietnam-China conflict, there were no reports of fighting. Hanoi's official radio said the Vietnamese government proposed that talks on the border dispute open Friday at the level of vice foreign ministers. The radio, monitored in Tokyo, said the proposal was made to Lu Ming, Chinese ambassador to Vietnam, by Nguyen Tien, Teacher, 95, Dies WHITING Otto Merriman, a Whiting High School teacher for 47 years, died Friday.

Richard von Weizsaecker, leader of West Berlin's Christian Democrats, is rated as having a good chance of unseating Mayor Dietrich Stobbe because a number of splinter parties may take votes away from Stobbe's governing Social Democrats in the city assembly.

The SPD, led by Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, governs West Germany. 2 Acquitted HONG KONG (AP) Two men sentenced to die in China as counterrevolutionaries were acquitted after a retrial, the Hong Kong Communist newspaper Wen Wei Po reported Saturday. The paper said Zhu Fengqi and Zhang Min were arrested in 1975 for criticizing former Defense Minister Lin Piao and the radical leaders who have come to be known as the "Gang of Four," and were convicted and sentenced to death in November 1977. Both appealed to China's Supreme Court, which ordered a new trial that resulted in acquittal. Lin died in a plane crash in 1971, reportedly while fleeing to the Soviet Union alter an attempt to kill Chairman Mao Tse-tung.

Terrorist Seized ATHENS, Greece (AP) Police said Saturday they captured one of Greece's most wanted men, alleged rightist terrorist Apostolos Pro-topappas, 32, after a brief gunfight at an apartment building. He is accused of being a member of the National Resurrection group, which claims responsibility for a series of bombings in Athens since democracy was restored to Greece in 1974. The group supports the military-backed dictatorship that ruled from 1967-1974. The bombings caused damage and injuries but no deaths. PlowingRecord NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) Kenyan farmer Fanie Kruger claimed a world plowing endurance record Friday, plowing his father's farm non-stop for 54 hours, 24 minutes.

Kenyan government officers supervised the feat. Kruger left the tractor seat for only 24 minutes. Farming sources said the previous record was set by a British farmer, John Sephton, at 50 hours in 1974. Book on Fossils TOKYO (AP) China is about to publish an illustrated book on fossils found in Sichuan (Szechuan) province since 1949, the official Xinhua (Hsinhua)-news agency said Saturday. It said the book describes 2,800 species, 73 of which were the first of their kind ever found.

Hotel Strike NCIA, Spain (AP) A three-day strike by 30,000 hotel workers in this city on the Mediterranean ended Saturday with a contract agreement. The settlement came hours after the strikers rejected an offer of a minimum monthly pay of $362 and continued to press for a $400 minimum. Terms of the settlement were not immediately released.
