BYADELE L. MACKANOS Times Staff Writer GARY -John A. Vuko believed that being idle was a waste of time. Mr. Vuko, 83, a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Merrillville after a massive stroke.

"My dad was active right up to his last moment of life, and throughout his life, no one kept as busy as he did," said his son, Joel Vuko. "Dad had just been recruited from Froebel High to play football at Horace Mann High School, but when his father died, he had to leave and take on a full-time job," he said. During his life, Mr. Vuko worked as a plumber by trade and was chief plumbing inspector for Gary in 1952.

He was also owner of American Plumbing and Heating Corp. in Gary and Portage. After Mr. Vuko retired, he still remained active in the family business, his son said. "Dad would still come around, write estimates and talk to customers," Joel Vuko said.
