A report by the Aviation Association of Indiana of the economic impact of all 110 of the state's public and private airports states the Griffith-Memllville Airport has the biggest economic impact of any airport in the area, beating out the Gary Regional Airport more than 2 to 1. For more information, call 'i ir i ii i I Jent is first applicant for vacant Juvenile Court seat Times Staff Report MERRILLVILLE A Hobart lawyer Tuesday became the first applicant for the vacancy on the Lake Juvenile Court bench. Julia Jent, 45, who maintains an office at 4901 Broadway in Gary, had applied for the last vacancy on the Superior Court bench, and asked that her application be put in for the juvenile position. Jent is a 1982 graduate of the Valparaiso University law school and received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University Northwest in Gary in 1979. The deadline is Dec.

1 for lawyers who want to apply for the vacancy created by the defeat of Juvenile Court Judge Darlene Wanda Mears in the Nov. 3 election. She lost a retention bid by slightly more than 3,000 votes. It is the second vacancy on the Superior Court bench within the last three months. Superior Court Judge Paul Stanko left the bench in September to go into private practice.

The Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission, which receives applications and interviews candidates, will narrow the field to three names that will be submitted to Gov. Evan Bayh, who will make the final selection. Times photos by Aldino Gallo Firm to study ways to ease jail overcrowding Lake County Commissioners approved an agreement with Phillips Swager Associates, the architectural, engineering and planning firm that had recommended building a $21.5 million jail and renovating the existing jail. The plan would have increased capacity to 553 inmates. the latest study a few weeks before commissioners agreed to hire it for the job. County Attorney John Dull said he authorized the firm to begin the study in an attempt to protect the commissioners from legal problems.

See JAIL, Page B-2 County officials, under federal court order to make jail improvements, opted for the cheaper jail renovation plan in 1987, then estimated at $8.7 million. Those costs exceeded the estimate by more than $1 million. The renovated jail has space for 465 inmates, but it's sup posed to house 390. The population has soared to more than 500, and county officials are trying to find ways to house the additional inmates. The study's cost was capped at $18,000, plus travel and other expenses.

The council voted to change the zoning classification of the vacant corner lot at 121st Street and Schrage Avenue from a neighborhood retail and general residential district to general retail.

A union hall is an allowable use under the new zoning classification.
