BUT AS the final day of the season dawned, a three-way tie between St. Louis, Philadelphia and Cincinnati was easily within reach. The Cardinals and Reds were tied for the lead while the Phillies, pitted against the Reds that afternoon, were just one game behind. The Cardinals were scheduled to finish in a single game with the Mets who had knocked them off in the first two games of their one the more bizarre developments of a completely incongruous season. Sympathies among all but ardent individual team rooters, were divided between the three coming batants.

Many pulled for the Phillies because they had seemed a their 'followers had anticipated a cinch just a short time ago and World Series for the City of Brotherly Love. Still others leaned toward St. Louis because the Cardinals' faithful followers hadn't experienced the excitement of a World Series since 1946. (Cincinnati won the NI. flag in '61 and the Phillies were in the 1950 Series). of the final week in first place with a one-game lead.

Meanwhile, the rampaging Cardinals in the midst of an eight-game winning streak stood just games behind in third place. The Reds were in the "Driver's Seat' -or so everyone said. They had three games coming up with the sixth-place Pirates while the Phillies and Cardinals would be battling each other in St. Louis. However, Pittsburgh had other ideas.

They shut out the Reds 2-0 on Tuesday night and followed with a 1-0 "whitewashing" on Wednesday night in a titantic pitching duel which went 16 innings and saw a record set for strikeouts by two teams in one game-36. That game--experts were to avow later -probably cost the Reds the pennant. Although they won the next night, 5-4, Cincy went through 34 consecutive innings during that series without scoring a run. THUS WAS the stage set for ON THE season's closing day, the Phillies shut out the Reds, 10- but for them it was too little, too late. The Cardinals finally managed to subdue the Mets and won the pennant with an 11-5 victory at Busch Stadium.

The Phils and Reds tied for second, one game out and the Giants finished fourth, three games behind. It would require a volume to recap the entire madcap NL race, but the following are just a few of the more eccentric developments. The luckless Phillies, who had coasted along with comfortable leads of as much as games during the second half of the season, saw a game lead evaporate in one seven-day stretch durthe second last week. The Reds, who were games back of the leaders on Sept. 20, went on a nine-game winning streak during which time the Phils lost 10 straight, including three to St.

Louis, and Cincinnati came home to close out the season on the grand finale with a state of suspense and excitement which only baseball can provide. Sports Illustrated expressed it most adequately in an editorial: it (baseball) can reach heights of sustained excitement unmatched by any other sport in the world, excitement that lasts and lasts, day after day after day." Right down to the final day of a 174-day schedule. A few other unbelievable developments of a completely "whacky" season: The Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the NL flag in 1963 and defeated the Yankees in a four-game World Series, finished in a tie for sixth place, 13 games behind. Unbelievable! Cincinnati moved from games behind on September 21 to one game ahead on September 27, representing a standings change of games in seven days. Incredible! The Phillies lost their last seven home games.

Pittsburgh lost five straight home games to St. Louis (Sept. 24-27). Cincinnati won nine in a row, including eight on the road, then came home in first place on September 27 by one game and lost four of their last five games at Crosley Field. St.

Louis had won eight straight, including five on the road, when the Mets moved in for the final week-end laboring under an eight- game losing streak. Casey Stengel's last placers took two straight. Fantastic! With a chance to tie or win the pennant on the final day, the Reds were shut out by a local boyJim Bunning who grew up in the Greater Cincinnati area and whose off-season occupation is selling securities to Red fans. Ironic! But so it went. And the National League continued on its merry way, sticking to its unwritten law that a new champion must be crowned each year.

It's been that way now since 1959, and on only three occasions since 1944 had a team been able to win two in a row in the NL. To apply the frosting to the cake, the final official paid attendance figures showed that the booming National League set a record for a third consecutive year with 12,045,190 admissions clicked off on the turnstiles.
