Harold Gentry's plans for future work in the Valparaiso Park and Recreation district lay far more stress on the improvement of existing facilities than on the expansion of facilities. 1 The district's outdoor activities now use some 250 acres of land scattered through Valparaiso and Center township. It can be operated from inside the bucket or down onhe boom in emergencies, with controls on the boom overriding those in the bucket as a safety feature. Jim also added that the job he and Carl Rutt were doing high on the pole that day at the alley between Washington and Lafayette, would have taken a line crew, without the aid of the modern boom, about a day. For instance, We're lacking in activities for adults, senior citizens, the aged and the handicapped," Gentry said. "We're in pretty good shape as far as children's recreation is concerned, though," he said. 'The district employs about 40 part-time and fulltime persons as counselors and supervisors of recreational activities during summer months.

Most of the counselors and supervisors devote themselves to children's programs, working at the five neighborhood playgrounds operated by the Park and Recreation district and supervising children from four to 16 years old as they play a vast number of different of Edwin J. Strass- f4 we can," he said, "and are using the savings to improve maintenance work in parks andd recreation areas." Gentry feels that maintenance is one of the most pressing demands in the Park and Recreation district.

"Yet, we're doing all we can afford to do," he said. Gentry predicts that within two to three years more thorough maintenance will effect a marked increase in the beauty of parks and recreation areas. Although none of the district's areas looks shoddy, Gentry is the first to, admit the need for small improvements here and there in the areas. Tax Rates The district levies a 25 cent per $100 valuation tax for parks and 20 cents per $100, for recreation funds. The tax is levied only on property within the Valparaiso city limits.

As of Jan. 1, the district was due to pay $307,000 to retire various bond issues between 1963 'and 1982. Its 1963 budget allocated $39,318 for recreation expenses and $79,922 for park, golf course and lake expenses. The district also operates Forest park, containing picnic and garden areas near the west edge of Valparaiso, the Robert S. Mae Civic range at the sanitation- plant near the southwest corner of Valparaiso and sports fields on the Porter County fairgrounds.

Dynamic Ideas A tour of Park and Recreation district facilities with Gentry as a guide reveals the dynamic nature of his ideas and hopes for development of recreajpnal activities in the city. Although some of his hopes are broad in scope, the 30-year old, $7,200 a year superintendent doesn't seem to lose sight of the necessary details to be considered in day-to-day Park and Recreation district operations and in the mapping of future plans in the district. At present, Gentry speaks only of one major expansion he'd like to make in Park and Recreation district facilities. "We'd like to go to an 18-hole golf course if we can get the money," he said. The nine-hole golf course now covers about 60 acres.

"It's tricky and pretty good," according to "We'll need 70 to 75 more acres for a second nine holes," Gentry said. He also talks enthusiastically about long-range plans for the development of Glenrose park near Glendale boulevard and Roosevelt road in northeast Valparaiso. "We're planning everything you can imagine in the line of recreational activities here," Gentry said in regard to Glenrose park. "But it will be another 10 years before it is fully developed. "Just a few of the things we plan to have here will include a horseshoe pitching area, tennis court that can be flooded in winter to serve as an ice skating rink and a baseball diamond with grounds as good as those in major league parks," Gentry said.
