Differences in opinion between the ambulance crews and the physicians will be decided after the transfer is made, be added. In addition, the county commissioners may arrange a standards system for private transfer companies so the public would be assured adequate service. The EMSC would recommend standards to the commissioners, who would accept bids on a PMH non-emergency transfer franchise. The idea will be investigated further by Andersen.

The EMSC member also said private transfer companies should' be included in the county's disaster plan. Because of the difficulty in having a countywide "911" system, only Portage is going to go through with it. Mullin said NOPAC will watch the Portage system for six months before deciding whether to go with "911." All records and bookkeeping for Area III will be taken over full time by Area III March 1, said Fine. The work has been done until now by hospital personnel. A dispatch secretary will take over the work at a $8,800 salary.

by Kathy Barks Portage will receive one of south and central county's new ambulance in a trade arranged Thursday night at a meeting of the County Emergency Medical Service Commission. Chris Fine, Area III chief technician, said Area I (Portage) was welcome to use one of Area Ill's new mobile intensive care units. Presently used as a backup ambulance, the vehicle hasn't been used much in recent months. What they will receive in exchange is one of Area I's older ambulances. Area III crews will be able to use the older unit for backup and for long-distance emergency transfers.

Final arrangements on the transfer will take place before next month's EMSC meeting. As commission member William Andersen pointed out, "We're going to look like dummies if that ambulance isn't put to use." Area I and Area II (North Porter County Ambulance Commission) each received one new ambulance in recent months. NOPAC Administrator John Mullin said he approved of Portage receiving the Area III ambulance but added his area should be tops on the list for a new ambulance in 1980. The ambulance Area III would have received from NOPAC if the Area Ill-Area I trade had not been arranged is in such bad shape that it would have been very inconvenient to use for long-range transfers, Mullin said. While mentioning transfers, the County EMSC passed a resolution supporting the Porter County Medical Society and County Board of Commissioners in asking for a CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scanner.

Requests from Porter Memorial Hospital to obtain a scanner have been turned down repeatedly. Having the equipment would drastically cut down on transfers, agreed EMSC members. Since Area III turned their nonemergency transfer service over to private ambulance services, a question has arisen of when ambulance crews should be brought in for "emergency" transfers. Andersen suggested a definition, stating the situation would be deemed an emergency when so decided by the doctor in attendance SO 2 40 54 2n la 14 35 302 30 23 42 31 77 3 'A 37 15V4 24 3D 4 4 20 55 24 Vk 15 37 23 25 Mrs. Albert Kalsbeek CHESTERTON Services for Mrs.
